Permanent Glass-Lined Equipment Repair: A Validated Alternative to Replacement

Damage to glass-lined equipment can create a serious challenge for chemical and pharmaceutical facilities. Chips, cracks, worn areas, and other failures in the glass lining can compromise corrosion resistance and potentially take critical equipment out of service.

Traditionally, facilities facing significant glass damage have had limited options: live with a temporary repair, replace the damaged component, or send equipment out for extensive work.

Glasslined Technologies offers another option: permanent vitreous enamel repair.

Our repair process restores damaged glass-lined steel with a true glass coating, providing facilities with an alternative to replacing otherwise serviceable equipment.

A Repair Process Put to the Test

When repairing glass-lined equipment, performance matters long after the equipment returns to service. That is why Glasslined Technologies didn't simply develop a repair process. We put it through long-term testing.

Our process was validated by testing six coupons over a three-year period in accordance with requirements associated with ASTM B08.12, the ASTM subcommittee covering porcelain enamel.

Standards under ASTM B08.12 address several properties that are important to the performance of vitreous enamel coatings, including:

  • Acid resistance: ASTM C282 evaluates the resistance of porcelain enamel surfaces to acid exposure.

  • Thermal shock resistance: ASTM C385 evaluates how porcelain-enameled materials withstand rapid temperature changes.

  • Abrasion resistance: ASTM C448 addresses resistance to mechanical wear.

  • Coating continuity: ASTM C536 and C537 address electrical testing methods used to evaluate the continuity of glass coatings on metal substrates.

  • Thermal expansion: ASTM C539 evaluates the linear thermal expansion characteristics of porcelain enamel and glaze frits.

  • Alkali resistance: ASTM C614 evaluates the resistance of porcelain enamels to alkaline solutions.

  • Preparation for enameling: ASTM C660 addresses the production and preparation of gray iron castings intended for porcelain enameling.

Long-term validation provides an important distinction between a repair intended simply to cover a damaged area and a process designed to restore the performance characteristics expected from vitreous enamel.

Why Permanent Glass Repair Matters

Glass-lined reactors, vessels, agitators, baffles, dip pipes, valve components, and other process equipment represent significant investments. When localized damage occurs, replacing an entire component or vessel may not always be the most practical solution.

A permanent glass repair can allow facilities to address the damaged area while retaining equipment that is otherwise in serviceable condition. Depending on the equipment and extent of damage, this approach may help reduce replacement costs and avoid the lead times associated with sourcing new glass-lined components.

The goal is not simply to patch the damage. The goal is to restore the damaged area with vitreous enamel.

An Approach the Industry Is Recognizing

The value of localized glass repair is becoming increasingly recognized within the glass-lined equipment industry. Other manufacturers now describe processes in which damaged areas of glass-lined components are locally reworked and re-glass-lined rather than requiring complete replacement.

For customers, this growing recognition reinforces an important point: localized vitreous enamel repair can be a valuable option when glass-lined equipment is damaged.

Glasslined Technologies has invested in developing, testing, and validating its process so customers can make repair decisions based on demonstrated performance rather than a short-term fix.

Repair Instead of Replace

When glass-lined equipment is damaged, replacement doesn't necessarily have to be the first answer.

Glasslined Technologies specializes in vitreous enamel repair and new glass-coated steel equipment, providing customers with solutions for restoring critical process equipment and extending its useful service life.
